About Huilo-Huilo Biological Reserve

Huilo-Huilo Biological Reserve

Huilo-Huilo Biological Reserve is a 101,000-acre private nature reserve located in the Los Ríos Region of southern Chile, within the southern Andean Patagonian rainforest. The reserve rests on the eastern slopes of the Andes, incorporating temperate rainforest, pristine rivers, volcanic landscapes, and fjords. It supports a wide variety of flora and fauna, including endangered species like the pudú (the world's smallest deer) and the Chilean huemul deer. Established in 1999 by the Von Appen family, the reserve aims to promote sustainable ecotourism and conservation. Visitors to Huilo-Huilo can explore hikeable trails that wind through old-growth forests to beautiful waterfalls such as Salto Huilo-Huilo and Salto La Leona. The active Mocho-Choshuenco Volcano offers dramatic backdrops and challenging treks, while the Neltume River provides opportunities for fishing and kayaking. Unique accommodations designed in harmony with the environment include the Montaña Mágica Lodge, a volcano-shaped hotel with an indoor waterfall. The reserve's efforts support research projects and environmental education programs focused on forest preservation and native species protection. Outdoor enthusiasts are attracted to Huilo-Huilo for its combination of remote wilderness, culturally rich Mapuche heritage, and well-managed tourist infrastructure. Wildlife viewing, mountain biking, horseback riding, and guided birdwatching tours complement the hiking and camping options. The reserve’s commitment to sustainable tourism makes it a rising destination for those seeking an authentic Patagonian nature experience away from heavily trafficked parks.
